Abstract: Integrating industrial internet of things (IIoT) technologies into industrial processes has brought unprecedented efficiency, productivity, and connectivity advancements. However, with the proliferation of IIoT devices and the increasing complexity of industrial ecosystems, security has become a paramount concern. Accordingly, this study provides a comprehensive review of diverse technologies, strategic approaches, and emerging techniques that collectively form the bedrock of robust security frameworks for industrial IoT. We thoroughly examine the prevailing technologies shaping the industrial IoT landscape, highlighting their strengths and security vulnerabilities. Addressing the dynamic nature of IIoT, the study dissects various strategies employed to fortify these interconnected systems against an array of cyber threats. By synthesizing insights from current literature, the study not only elucidates contemporary security challenges but also extrapolates future trajectories for IIoT security. Moreover, the study intertwines real-world case studies of security breaches within industrial settings, providing a refined understanding of the threat landscape faced by IIoT deployments. Dissecting these incidents underscores the urgency of robust security measures and offers valuable lessons gleaned from these damning experiences. Central to the study’s contribution is the presentation of an architecture tailored for securing IIoT. Melding cutting-edge foundational technologies with proven methodologies, this proposed architecture serves as a blueprint for fortifying the resilience of Industrial IoT systems against cyber threats. The strategic alignment of IIoT devices layer, servers, broker layer, unified namespace layer, edge layer, and cloud layer within this architecture forms a cohesive defense, empowering industrial enterprises to navigate the complex cybersecurity terrain. Finally, the study lays the groundwork for future advancements in this critical domain. It seeks to inspire ongoing discourse and research in the pursuit of safeguarding the interconnected industrial ecosystems that underpin our modern technological infrastructure.
